Lord Jagannath – Lord of the Universe, worshipped in Puri with Balabhadra and Subhadra, famous for Rath Yatra.
Lord Jagannath is a form of Lord Vishnu or Krishna, mainly worshipped in the city of Puri, Odisha. The word Jagannath means “Lord of the Universe.” He is worshipped along with his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra in the famous Jagannath Temple.
One of the most unique features of Jagannath worship is the wooden idols with large round eyes and unfinished arms. These forms symbolize that God is beyond human perfection and belongs to everyone, regardless of caste or background. The deities are made from sacred neem wood and are ceremonially replaced in a ritual called Nabakalebara after certain years.
The most important festival connected to Lord Jagannath is the Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival). During this event, the three deities are placed on huge, beautifully decorated chariots and pulled by thousands of devotees through the streets. It represents the Lord coming out of the temple to bless all people.
